Reviews For Sob Rock By Artist John Mayer

  • Another Great Record!

    By Neveils
I’ve been listening to John Mayer since his days at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta and I love how each studio album showcases something different from Mr. Mayer. If people will actually listen to the music and the lyrics, they’ll hear plenty of complex musicianship, catchy hooks, tongue-in-cheek fun at times, and exceptional production. I love it when John lets it rips on the guitar and plays the blues, but that influence is all throughout his albums — this one included. Take the time to listen and enjoy some poppy, luscious sounding melodies with an 80’s theme. Please note: Toto isn’t the only popular group from the 80’s, so while some of Mayer’s track have that more iconic 80’s sound, every song has a clear influence from that decade.

People saying this doesn’t have blues don’t know music. This is an album that grows with you and I think in a live setting it will be even better. I think these are songs which may not immediately resonate with some but as you live and listen you may find comfort in the sound and make memories to this music. I’m a bit down that it’s just 10 tracks and a few were already released but overall I like that he’s sticking with a style and theme on this. It seems to borrow heavily from its influences while also making something distinct. The Toto influence is likely most noticeable but considering who is on the keys for this album it’s not surprising. I would give this a 4.5/5 but so many people left a 1 star just bc they are mad and didn’t give the album a chance. They want the instant gratification and haven’t taken time to live with the album. I think more people will come to appreciate this album over time. It’s a grower compared to his other projects. I really hope a deluxe comes out with 20 tracks but I hope I don’t have to buy the songs I already own again.

  • Boz Scaggs Redux

    By TCroc
At a quick sampling listen, I'm much reminded of listening to Boz Scaggs way back when...and, yeah, The Eagles, too. Gotta say that I enjoy to flashback quality along with the personal and crafty song writing. This seems like a fortuitous way for Mayer to bend his particular talents. Good fun. Will be interesting to see if our current edgy moment will welcome this or find it a little too enjoyable.
  • Glad YOU are back!

Thank god you are away from the GD stint! Love some of the new songs. My fave will always be the great Battle Studies but these are showing you are back at it. People have to understand artists change as they get older. This should be a given!
  • One Note

I honestly can say this is the first time John Mayer has disappointed me with an album. I really had high hopes for this album…. Sad
  • Not my fav but always a fan

    By DuchessHC
This definitely isn’t my fav of his albums but I’d have to think for a long time before I ever didn’t wholeheartedly support any of his music. I actually appreciate that each album is so different. We’re supposed to evolve and grow so they shouldn’t all sound the same.

Music is the art of arranging sounds in time to produce a composition through the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. It is one of the universal cultural aspects of all human societies. General definitions of music include common elements such as pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces (such as songs without instrumental accompaniment) and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "(art) of the Muses"); see § Etymology and glossary of musical terminology.

Music can be divided into genres (e.g., country music) and genres can be further divided into subgenres (e.g., country blues and pop country are two of the many country subgenres), although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to personal interpretation, and occasionally controversial. For example, it can be hard to draw the line between some early 1980s hard rock and heavy metal. Within the arts, music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art or as an auditory art. Music may be played or sung and heard live at a rock concert or orchestra performance, heard live as part of a dramatic work (a music theater show or opera), or it may be recorded and listened to on a radio, MP3 player, CD player, smartphone or as film score or TV show.
