Reviews For Bernstein: Mass By Artist Marin Alsop, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Morgan State University Choir & Peabody Children's Chorus

  • Nasally

Don't buy this. The celebrant is much too nasally when he sings. It really distracts from the music
  • Not worth your money

This recording of MASS is a little sluggish and lacks energy in places. You're better off spending your money on the version with Alan Titus as the Celebrant. Just for clarification sake, the moments that I'm talking about are in the jazz section of Agnus Dei and the whole of Offertory.
  • Worth hearing

It's worth hearing Bernstein's Mass. Some people hate it whereas others love it. This is certainly the best recording to get, especially for Sykes performance.
  • Alsop aces the Bernstein Mass!

Marin Alsop's reading of the controversial Bernstein Mass is precisely what we've come to expect from the Baltimore Symphony's outstanding maestro: fresh, vibrant, cathartic, and empathic. The mass itself, more vernacular and theatrical than liturgical, is a hit-or-miss piece, but for those who love Bernstein and/or his famous Mass, you will find this to be a top-quality interpretation and recording. The recording is sonically robust and clean, and features inspired performances from Jubilant Sykes (baritone); Asher Edward Wulfman (boy soprano); the Morgan State University Choir, under the direction and preparation of Dr. Eric Conway; and the Peabody Children's Chorus, directed by Doreen Falby. Certainly a top-tier recording of this popular American work!
  • Bernstein Mass

Leonard Bernstein's Mass is not your typical Mass. It's fresh, vibrant and exciting. The piece uses the text from the liturgy of the Roman Mass, as well as, additional texts by Bernstein and Leonard Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked). This combination brings new life to a style of music that can sometimes be boring. Jubilant Sykes is the celebrant and his performance is nothing short of outstanding. The voices of the Morgan State University Choir, the Peabody Children's Chorus, and the individual soloists throughout the piece are all excellent and really add to the enjoyment of the piece. You won't be disappointed!

This is by far the best of all the recordings of Berstein's Mass! From the Celebrant to the Peabody Childrens Chorus, they were all WONDERFUL!!!
  • Not really the best.

But it's good enough. Alsop bills herself as Lenny's heir so you can expect that she'll pay attention to the details. This seems to be the fault of the album as is most of her recordings: She follows the score too close for comforts, negating any true expression to break forth. Still if you're looking for a learning recording you wouldn't be put out to get this. The performances are good by the orchestra and soloists alike. If you're interested in her other Lenny recordings however, go and check out her reading of the Chichester Psalms also on Naxos. That one is a much better representation of her abilities.
  • Best Of All

Of the now 4 recordings available of this wonderful work, this is by far the best! Jubilant Sykes brilliantly performs the celebrants role and Alsop conducts the BSO with feeling and sensitivity to what this powerful work means.

Music is the art of arranging sounds in time to produce a composition through the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. It is one of the universal cultural aspects of all human societies. General definitions of music include common elements such as pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces (such as songs without instrumental accompaniment) and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "(art) of the Muses"); see § Etymology and glossary of musical terminology.

Music can be divided into genres (e.g., country music) and genres can be further divided into subgenres (e.g., country blues and pop country are two of the many country subgenres), although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to personal interpretation, and occasionally controversial. For example, it can be hard to draw the line between some early 1980s hard rock and heavy metal. Within the arts, music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art or as an auditory art. Music may be played or sung and heard live at a rock concert or orchestra performance, heard live as part of a dramatic work (a music theater show or opera), or it may be recorded and listened to on a radio, MP3 player, CD player, smartphone or as film score or TV show.
